To become certified, an applicator must pass a written exam. Once attained,
certification may be maintained by attending courses approved by the Maryland
Department of Agriculture.
Individuals who need to use pesticides classified as restricted (those that may
cause harm to humans or to the environment even when used according to the
directions on the label) must show that they are competent to apply restricted
products by passing a certification examination, administered by the Maryland
Department of Agriculture . An individual who uses restricted use pesticides on
a crop or commodity (field crops, vegetables, ornamentals, turf, fruits, etc.)
that he or she produces is classified as a private applicator.
