"A pesticide is any substance that kills, repels, or otherwise controls any pest. Herbicides (weedkillers), fungicides, rodenticides, insecticides, etc. are all types of pesticides."

Pesticide Safety Education

This program helps pesticide applicators learn to use pesticides in the safest, most effective manner to control pest infestations while protecting the health of humans and the environment.

Dr. Amy Brown serves as the Coordinator of the Pesticide Applicator Training Program for the state of Maryland, but many other Extension faculty members play significant roles. County Extension offices offer initial certification training for private applicators (growers) to help them prepare for the certification examination. County Extension faculty also offer recertification training for private applicators.

Maryland Cooperative Extension also offers commercial applicator recertification training for the following categories:

    • Agricultural
    • Right-of-Way
    • Industrial Weed
    • Forest, Aquatic
    • Grain and Commodity Fumigation
    • Wood Treatment
    • Ornamentals and Turf
    • Structural Pests
